Break Points (BP)

A break point is a point on which the receiver can win the opponent's service game.

break-point opportunities

Plain definition

A break point occurs when the receiving player is one point away from breaking serve. It is a pivotal, often high-pressure moment. The number of opportunities created and converted helps measure the genuine threat a player poses in return games.

Derived terms

BP Conversion%

The percentage of break-point opportunities converted by the receiving player.

BP Saved%

The percentage of break points saved by the server.

Why it matters

Break points show which player creates the most important return opportunities. They can distinguish a genuinely dominant performance from a close scoreline and reveal how both the server and receiver handle pressure.

Practical example

At 30-40 on the opponent's serve, the receiver has a break point. Winning the next point means winning the return game.
