A handicap gives a team or player a virtual advantage or disadvantage before the bet is settled.
spreadpoint spread
In plain English
A handicap creates a notional margin between the competitors before settlement. A favourite may start with a virtual deficit, while an underdog receives a cushion. The bet is therefore about covering the handicap rather than simply winning the event.
Derived terms
Positive Handicap
A handicap that gives the selected team or player a virtual head start.
Negative Handicap
A handicap that gives the selected favourite a virtual deficit before settlement.
Asian Handicap
A form of handicap betting that can remove the draw or split the stake across two adjacent lines, depending on the selected line.
Why it matters
Handicap betting goes beyond a basic winner selection. It can be useful when a favourite looks strong but offers little value in the winner market, or when an underdog is expected to remain competitive. It expresses projected differences in ability more precisely.
Practical example
With a +1.5 goal handicap, a team can lose 1-0 and the selection still wins because the virtual adjustment puts that team ahead for settlement purposes.
