Pace
Pace estimates the number of possessions played, usually expressed over a standard game length.
tempopossessions per game
Plain definition
Pace estimates how quickly a basketball game is played. A higher figure means possessions occur more frequently. Depending on the source, it may be shown per game or normalised to a standard length such as 48 minutes in the NBA. Pace measures activity, not efficiency.
Why it matters
Pace is essential for interpreting raw statistical totals. A team may record more points, shots or rebounds simply because it plays quickly rather than efficiently. Pace places those totals in context and helps project how a matchup may unfold.
Practical example
Two teams both score 110 points. In a high-possession game that total may be driven by pace; in a low-possession game it points to much stronger offensive efficiency.
