Points per Possession (PPP)
Points per Possession is the average number of points scored on each possession.
possession efficiency
Plain definition
PPP shows how many points an offence produces per possession. Depending on the context, it can describe a team, a player or a specific play type. It connects offensive output directly to the possessions used.
Why it matters
PPP allows offences and play types to be compared without being distorted by pace. It helps distinguish a team that scores heavily because it plays quickly from one that uses each possession efficiently, and it can expose profitable actions or defensive weaknesses.
Practical example
A team scores 100 points on an estimated 90 possessions. It produces roughly 1.11 points per possession, allowing its efficiency to be assessed independently of pace.
