Field Goals (FG)
Field Goals are two-point or three-point shots attempted during play, excluding free throws.
field-goal shooting
Plain definition
A field goal is any two-point or three-point shot attempted during live play. Free throws are excluded. Field-goal statistics show attempts, makes and shooting percentage without mixing in points scored at the free-throw line.
Derived terms
FGM
Field Goals Made: the number of successful field-goal attempts.
FGA
Field Goals Attempted: the total number of field-goal attempts.
FG%
Field Goal Percentage: the percentage of field-goal attempts that are made.
Why it matters
FG statistics provide the foundation for analysing shooting accuracy. They show volume, makes and conversion rate, but should be combined with three-point, free-throw, eFG% and TS% data for a complete view of offensive efficiency.
Practical example
A player makes seven of 15 shots during live play. Free throws are not included, so the player's field-goal line is 7-for-15.
