Plain definition

Three-point statistics show how many shots are attempted and made from beyond the arc, the percentage converted and the role those shots play in an offence. They help describe both shooting accuracy and shot selection.

Derived terms

3PM

Three-Pointers Made: the number of successful three-point field goals.

3PA

Three-Point Attempts: the number of three-point field goals attempted.

3P%

Three-Point Percentage: the percentage of three-point attempts that are made.

3PA Rate

The share of all field-goal attempts that are taken from three-point range.

Opp 3P%

The three-point percentage recorded by opponents against a defence.

Opp 3PA Rate

The share of opponent field-goal attempts that come from three-point range.

Why it matters

Three-point shooting is central to the shape of modern offences. High volume stretches the defence and can increase scoring variance. Combined with FG, eFG%, pace and ratings, it reveals much more about a team's true offensive profile.

Practical example

A player makes four shots from beyond the three-point line. Those four three-pointers produce 12 points.
