True Shooting Percentage (TS%)
True Shooting Percentage measures scoring efficiency across field goals, three-pointers and free throws.
shooting efficiency
Plain definition
TS% summarises how efficiently a player or team turns shooting opportunities into points. Unlike eFG%, it also accounts for free throws, so it provides a broader measure of scoring efficiency.
Derived terms
TS%
True Shooting Percentage: a scoring-efficiency percentage that incorporates field goals and free throws.
Why it matters
TS% evaluates a scorer without looking only at accuracy from the field. It rewards players who score efficiently in different ways, including by drawing fouls and converting free throws, and allows different offensive profiles to be compared on a common basis.
Practical example
Two players both score 20 points. One needs 22 field-goal attempts and takes few free throws, while the other uses 12 attempts and converts several free throws. TS% shows that the second player produced those points more efficiently.
