Points per Shot (PPS)
Points per Shot measures the average scoring return for each field-goal attempt.
scoring return per shot
Plain definition
PPS shows how many points are produced, on average, for each field-goal attempt. In this usage, total points are divided by field-goal attempts, so free-throw points can contribute to scoring even though free throws are not counted as field-goal attempts. It measures offensive return beyond simple shooting percentage.
Why it matters
PPS explains why some shot profiles are more productive than others. It highlights the value of three-pointers, finishes near the rim and sequences that also generate free throws. It complements eFG%, TS% and PPP when assessing an offence.
Practical example
A player scores 24 points on 16 field-goal attempts. The resulting PPS is 1.50, indicating a strong scoring return for each shot attempted.
