Plain definition
The most common combination is points, rebounds and assists, although other combinations are possible. The usual categories are points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. Reaching double figures in three of them during one game demonstrates a broad influence on play.
Why it matters
A triple-double often reflects a central role and exceptional versatility. It draws attention to players who score, create and affect possessions in multiple ways, although pace, minutes and actual efficiency still provide important context.
Practical example
A point guard records 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Reaching at least 10 in three major categories produces a triple-double.
